KYW 2018 – Application & Payment Changes

As announced on Monday night, the KYW will be moving to a four week programme next summer. This is a remarkable achievement for the group and one which we have been planning for quite some time now. Recent advancements in internal processes like the online application system and the demand from campers in newer regions has allowed us to grab this opportunity with both hands without massively increasing our workload. If you missed Monday’s post, the dates for summer 2018 are below; Week 1: June 16th – June 23rd (Dundalk, Tallaght, Kildare, Cork) Week 2: June 23rd – June 30th

KYW 2018 – Dates

‘Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog.’ – Roald Dahl. We are entering the 8th year of the KYW, and when you stop for a minute to think about what this group has achieved in those 8 years a number of words flood to mind; to sum it up really quickly I would say our progress has been absolutely extraordinary and slightly surreal. We have seen some remarkable combinations of committed leaders make their mark on the KYW over the years, and during our annual October retreat in

Reeling in the Leaders – Megan Crilly

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Megan Crilly. My closest friends would describe me as the most emotional person that they have ever met. Believe me when I say, it’s about to get v emotional up in here so look away now if high intensity emotion isn’t your thing..   “You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of living with and loving people in another place.”    For the past seven years, I have been attending Knockadoon

Get the red jumpers ready – KYW 18 is coming

As is tradition, every October the Senior Leader publishes a post addressing the upcoming KYW year which would kick off the planning for KYW18. I would love to say that today marks the beginning of what promises to be an unforgettable summer for the KYW, but I would be lying. The truth is, KYW18 planning started months ago and the wheels are firmly in motion to make it the best year yet. We have already achieved a lot in these last few months since we left camp in the summer, most notably; Our leader group grew by 32 new leaders,

Reeling in the Leaders – Shannon McLaughlin

My experience of Knockadoon should have started back in 2013, 15 year old me was one of the few people in my friend group that had never experienced Knockadoon. After hearing plenty of stories and seeing plenty of photos of the previous year, me and my friend decided that we wanted to experience it and understand why people looked forward to going to this camp every summer. We both decided to ask our parents but unfortunately they thought it would be best to wait an extra year because we had never stayed away from home for that long without our

Reeling in the Leaders – Kinker Duffin

To be honest I can’t even remember a time that I didn’t know about Knockadoon. My older sister went when she was around 8 and that triggered a chain reaction of my Mam getting rid of us for a week every July. I still remember how I used to pray I could go to camp every year as a kid. Even though my Mam just wanted rid of me for a week I can’t thank her enough for making me go. Even now I can’t understand what it is about Knockadoon that keeps me coming back. I know I have

Reeling in the Leaders – Hannah O’Hare

It all started way back when in 2011. I was a mere 12 years old, oblivious to what Knockadoon was and what it entailed. The only thing I really knew was that it was a week away from my parents and a week of good craic with my closest pals. I didn’t know what it looked like, where it was or where I would be staying. I was totally clueless. On the bus journey down I had the older kids heads’ wrecked with questions about what knockadoon really was about. Each of them replied ‘you’ll see when you get there

Its OK to talk – Orlaith O’Callaghan

Last Saturday was World Suicide Prevention Day, and to get involved in raising awareness and participating in the conversation among people of our own age about mental health, theKYW leaders took part in the selfie initiative with a simple message attached to all our posts: it’s ok to talk. I was thrilled to see how many people engaged with it, and to see how far the span of our posts reached. Through the power of social media, at least several hundred people saw the message that we spread and I like to think that we may have made a difference
